Charles William Sowers Jr. passed away Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at the age of 77. He will lovingly be remembered by his wife of 54 years, Jeanne and his children, Carole (Wes), Jacci (John), Clarke (Andrea), and Janell (Tom), and his 11 grandchildren and 5 greatgrandchilden. He is preceded in death by his son, Chad, and his daughter, Barbara.

Chuck was born in Saltillo, Ohio, on December 6, 1940, to Charles and Loriel Sowers. He was the oldest of four children, followed by Vernon, Marcia, and Kaye. After a year at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, he transferred to the University of Idaho where he competed on the swimming team and graduated with a degree in Physical Education. He later received a Master's degree in Mathematics.

He started his teaching career in Idaho, where he met his wife Jeanne, when he coached her brothers' football team. The family moved to Oregon in 1972 and Chuck taught math and coached several sports at The Dalles High School. In 1976, Chuck started teaching at Lakeridge High School where he worked until he retired in 1998. Over the years he taught every level of high school math and coached football, basketball, wrestling, and baseball. At Lakeridge he was well known for his tough love with his students, his tireless patience in helping them master the subject, his fun sense of humor, and the can of Coca-cola always in his hand. He was voted by the Class of 1998 to be their honorary graduate. Chuck also taught at Portland Community College for a number of years.

After retirement from teaching, Chuck and Jeanne moved to Canby in 1999 to expand his beekeeping business, Sowers Apiaries. This "hobby" that started with one hive for his garden is now a thriving business with five full-time employees.

Chuck will be remembered for being the hardest worker anyone has ever met, but who also loved to make others laugh with his stories. He loved to learn, and he was always encouraging of his own children to do whatever it was that made them happy. Nothing made him happier than seeing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially when they were being mischievous.

Services will be held at the Canby LDS Church at 1235 Elm Street on Saturday, October 13, 2018, at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, send school supplies to your local school. That was Chuck's favorite way to give.
