August “Augie” Carl Gabert

Augie was born on December 23, 1937 in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin. He was the son of Tilden and Bernice (Schuster) Gabert. He was baptized (February 27, 1938) and confirmed (April 6, 1952) at St John’s Lutheran Church in Valmy, Wisconsin. Augie met his future wife, Betty Herzog, in Columbus, Wisconsin. On June 15, 1968, he married Betty at Christ Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Augie and Betty were blessed with three daughters, Virginia, Kathryn, and Rebecca. Augie died on Tuesday, November 19th at the age of 81.


Augie earned a PhD in plant genetics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and then spent 44 years developing new varieties of cucumbers and squash. He worked for Ferry Morse Seed Co. near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin for 18 years and then worked for Arco Seeds/Sun Seeds/Nunhems in Brooks, Oregon for 26 years.

Augie devoted his life to serving God and sharing God’s love with others. He was passionate about walking door-to-door and sharing Jesus with the people he met. He served on the church council, as an elder, and as the outreach chairman at Zion Lutheran in Columbus, WI, Grace Lutheran in Portland, OR, and Amazing Grace Lutheran in Milwaukie/Portland, OR. He served on both the Evergreen Lutheran High School Board (Tacoma, WA) and the Pacific Northwest District Mission Board for many years. After his retirement, Augie shared God’s love with the shoppers at the Evergreen Thrift store in Milwaukie.

Augie’s hobbies included gardening, coaching wrestling, and following sports.


Survivors include his wife, Betty; three daughters, Virginia (Jonathan) Kehren of Morton Grove, IL, Kathryn (Dale) Rundgren of Citrus Springs, FL, and Rebecca Gabert of Scio, OR; grandchildren, Joshua & Jason Kehren, Hannah, Walter, Audrey, Stephen, Nathan, & Elias Rundgren; sister Nancy (Lyle) Mueller; brother Trent (Salva) Gabert; nieces, nephews, and their families.

Augie was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew.

A memorial service will be held at 11am on Tuesday, November 26th at Amazing Grace Lutheran Church (10110 SE Linwood Ave in Portland)

Memorials may be given in Augie’s name to Evergreen Lutheran High School in Tacoma, Washington or to the Praise & Proclaim Fund with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod's (WELS) Board for Home Missions in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
