Ailsa Medlicott

Ailsa Medlicott (neé Jeans) died peacefully aged 86 in the early hours of Monday, the 16th of December 2019. She was the loving and beloved mother of Charles, Jane, Ivan and Vanessa; grandmother of Miles, Evan, Grace, Gwennie, Freddie and Megan; and great-grandmother of Zoe, Iris, Oliver, Owen and Sid. She is also survived by her younger sister Edwina, nieces Gina, Stephanie, Caroline, Alice, Esma and Eren and nephews Emil, Simon Chinnery, Simon Churchill, and Thomas. Ailsa was also much loved by her great nieces and nephews in England, Turkey and Zimbabwe.

Ailsa was born in Gillingham, Kent, England in 1933. Her father, Frederick Jeans was a career officer in the Royal Navy who served in both world wars. Her mother, Ailsa Georgina, was a lifelong volunteer worker for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, The British Red Cross, Shelter - for the homeless- and Oxfam.

Ailsa spent a large part of her childhood in Trevone, Cornwall, on the south western coast of England. She attended the Royal Naval School for girls and on attaining her British higher school certificate, went on to study art at Kingston Art College. On graduation from art school, Ailsa embarked upon a career as a display window designer in some of England’s leading department stores, including Dickens and Jones of Regent Street, and Rackhams of Birmingham.

In 1959 Ailsa married John Medlicott and in 1960 they emigrated, initially to British Columbia, but eventually settling in Portland, Oregon and later in Canby. The marriage was dissolved in 1978. Ailsa then retrained at Clackamas Community College in accountancy. She subsequently worked as an accountant, raising and supporting her children until she retired at the age of 72. On retirement, Ailsa returned to her first love, art, and produced a significant body of work in watercolour. At her death, Ailsa was an elder of the Two Rivers Farm community which was of pivotal importance to her 56 years in Oregon. Ailsa will be sorely missed by her family and wide circle of friends for whom she will remain a source of love and inspiration. May her precious soul rest In peace. Go well our beloved Ailsa.

The Funeral Service is on Saturday 21st December at 1 pm at Two Rivers Farm, 28066 S. Meridian Road, Aurora, OR 97002.
