Gary Norman Falkenberg

date of birth May 12 1944

date of death July 6 2020

Gary Norman Falkenberg of Vancouver, Washington was born in Vancouver, BC, Canada to his American mother, Marjorie Ann Castile, and Canadian father, Norman Walter Falkenberg. After WWII the family moved back to Portland, Oregon where his mother was from. His younger brother, Reed, and sister, Julene, were born in Portland, Oregon.

He grew up in the Garden Home neighborhood of Portland and attended Garden Home Grade School and Beaverton High School. He met his future wife in the church youth group. In the summers, Gary would work on his great-uncle Paul Strohschein’s farm in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. From that he gained a love of animals and farming.

After high school Gary worked in the family business and served in the National Guard as a tank driver. In 1965 he married that beautiful, smart girl from the youth group, Christine Ann Copenhagen.

After Gary’s father passed away, he and Christine took over the agricultural portion of the family business, Falkenberg Inc., a manufacturer of agricultural pumps and sprayers. They lived in Portland in the early years of their marriage but bought a farm and moved the family, which now included their two children, Heidi and Keith, to Canby, Oregon. They rebuilt that old farm and raised black angus cattle. Several years later they sold Walnut Hill Farm and built a second farm from scratch which included a large timber frame barn.

During those years Gary was involved in church, the Canby drug abuse prevention group called Dare to Care and the group Oregon Free From Drug Abuse. He continued to operate the family business, which began manufacturing dog bathing equipment under the name Prima Manufacturing.

He was a generous man who was always willing to give. He had a curious and inventive mind and loved cooking, history and music, especially opera. He was not hesitant to take on huge ambitious projects and bring others along for the adventure. He provided employment to many people over the years. Many young men learned the value of producing quality work from Gary.

He is preceeded in death by his wife, Christine, brother, Reed and survived by his sister, Julene Trigg, children, Heidi Petersen and Keith Falkenberg, grandchildren, Silas and Claire Petersen, son-in-law Bruce Petersen and, last but not least, his lovely wife, Marjorie Falkenberg, whom he married in 2009.

Gary died on July 6, 2020 from complications of a stroke.

A burial service will be held for immediate family on Thursday, July 23rd at Zion Memorial Park Cemetery in Canby, Oregon. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the ALS Association
